Indian Sports Strategy - The Real Agenda
Sunday, April 22nd, 2007Like the Sri Lanka’s Stratagem against Ricky Ponting’s team in the World Cup Super 8, India Team Selection is also following a hidden agenda.
First consider these facts:
- Is it not a fact that America is way ahead in terms of sports?
Is it not a fact that Americans are fanatics about their teams (as so are the European nations)?
Is it not a fact that India took over a large share of America’s business and India worked overtime so that American’s could enjoy their game of baseball, basketball or even football?
So, sometime, in 1980-90s a strategy was formed. A chief of police force was chosen for the task. The task was simple. Indian’s were too much emotionally attached to their hockey. This chief of police was commendable in the manner in which he stamped out terrorism from Punjab. His next task was even tougher. And nobody was to know the purpose of the mission (at least till the mission was successful). Today, he is successful in his task. And the task was - to stamp out Hockey from the minds of Indian people. It takes usually 20 years after the last triumph to wash out a sport from the mind of people. And if you see now, no one gets emotional discussing hockey. And full marks to the chief of Police who did not brag to media about his success. Since his mission was to free the minds of people so that they can get back to work and make India focus on work.
But there was an issue. A haryanvi lad around the same time, despite the best of government efforts to make slipshod teams (well they called ghavri, binny and mohinder pacers), won the Cricket World Cup (1983). Well, Team India (the one which drives India to work) did not lose hope. They installed a battery of people (the matrix) to destroy this new game. And years down the line, they have achieved the same success. Today, cricket has become empty blabber (like garibi hatao or even the population problem) and is expected to die quite soon. Still the matrix is taking no chances. It has this game under it’s crushing hold, but it’s hawk eye is watching for any other deviant game which tries to rise it’s head.

Saturday, January 20th, 2007A joker wore dhoti kurta, an ancient dress, though more symbolic of Gandhi to the present generation, and gave a stupendous performance of pole dance
1. The boy was Indian.
An Indian is expected to have more respect for it’s leaders, though parody as a form of expression is not a very acceptable thing in India. However for parody you need to exaggerate the characteristics of a person/ event, whereas this person did not exaggerate any such fact. He merely vulgarized his performance and was not an art form by any means. Thumbs Down.
2. Uploading of Content on YouTube.
These counter border channels defy all means of restrictions imposed by governments. It is befitting in a sense that now it is up to the receiver to decide on the acceptability of the message and the government would have to stop playing a role in that. Thumbs Up.

And surely reporting through a sensationalism is more deplorable than even the actual act. Press needs to regain its humility while reporting and not act as a Justice Delivery Van. Thumbs Up.
4. Inability of Indian Government in challenging YouTube in a large way
Time for governments to delicence Communcation and the control thereof. Selling of costly rights to broadcasts have been reduced to a mere hoax by the onslaught of Web, and VOIP. Why do you need to control and artificially raise prices of things that are available at a pittance anyway through technology that is a child’s play now. Thumbs Up.
5. How is Gandhi’s image affected?
As a leader of immense proportions he is not affected at all by such trivial matters. These small incidents however bring back his memories and it is good in that manner. They cannot indignify any person than the person who performed the act, since he has to carry the burden in front of his friends, family and colleagues through out his life. Thumbs Up.

Gandhi, or more popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi is the indian leader who led the freedom movement on a very unusual non-confrontationist agenda and did not give Britishers a platform to fight back. He used his knowledge of law to the fullest extent and was a natural ally of Jawahar Lal Nehru, another lawyer. The Gandhian style of operation extended itself to Nelson Mandela and many others after him who used his style to lead their nations to independence. Thumbs Up.
Shilpa Shetty and her Big Brother from UK
Saturday, January 20th, 2007The row over Jade Goody and her friend’s outbursts against Shilpa Shetty in particular in the British Reality TV show Big Brother had 10 prime characteristics:
1. Calling India a Slum:
This is perhaps the only racist remark in the whole episode.
Jade Goody asked Shilpa to go back to the slums from where she came. A definite remark against Indians though it just describes her personal feelings against Indian and cannot be projected as a general British (or International) perception of India. Does show the vanity of Jade as well as the shallowness of her thoughts. Thumbs Down.
2. Asking her to pick chicken bones from the toilet with her teeth
Though a common slang in english speaking world, No idea what it means, though it is merely a bullying statement by vain people. A shallow statement to make ever anyway. But remember that rarely does anyone speaking a slang means what he says. Thumbs Down.
3. Shilpa backtracks her statements
Shipla was inside the house and off contact and never mentioned that there was a racist remark. Though outraged British Indians thought so. So there was never a case of Shilpa backtracking. And there’s no problem if Shilpa doesn’t feel that she was being subjected to racist remarks. Pleae don’t force people to feel what you like, it is her own decision to feel the way she likes. Thumbs Up.
Indian newspapers though carried statements of her sister Shamita, another actress, to this effect but the next day they cried fowl. Another case of inaccurate reporting by Newspapers. Thumbs Down.
4. High Number of complaints received by British Media Watchdog
Given the sensitivity of the first statement, it was expected, though it could be a staged-managed response to try and revive a show with declining popularity. Neutral.
5. Jade Goody being invited to India to cleanse herself
This step by the Incredible India campaign is Humour in Bad taste. No matter how demeaning a statement is made by a person, to retaliate at the same level trivializes the issue and converts it to a personal slugfest. Thumbs Down.
6. Jade Goody being ousted by a huge margin from the show.
It is actually not about the remarks but about the way slang has come to stay in the language of british youth and they speak words without realising their meaning. Don’t understand? Well it’s like when people say Oh Holy Shit! They don’t really mean to say exactly that. Britishers don’t tolerate this type of slugfest and slandering and they have shown it in style. Thumbs Up.
7. Shilpa being called a small time actress for all what I (Jade Goody) know
Well, no one needs to be well informed in a personal confrontation situation. I don’t expect all the people in the world to know about Shilpa Shetty, so newspapers to even include that statement is just a case of sensationalisation. Thumbs Down.
8. Jade Goody’s has a Brand of perfumes that is being made in India!
Well this is a very important fact. And also that she has visited India for this. This proves that Jade is aware of India. This means either of two things, either Jade Goody has a very partisan view of things (shallow mind) OR this is the image that some of the visitors to India take home with them - not a good sign for Incredible India. Thumbs Down.
9. Shilpa made a lot of money
It is no one’s concern. Well she went to take part in this as a part of her job. Dear realize that she’s not representing India in Olympics. She’s gone there to make money and if that requires her to tolerate bullying and position herself so that she can move on to final stages it’s her right to stage manage herself. Neutral.
10. What is this fuss all about?
It was just a reality show - it showed reality. So what’s the big deal? This is REALITY. What is the job of governments in this? It’s not as if the show is promoting bullying or racism, so what is this fuss all about? Thumbs Down.
