Multimedia Industry in India

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

[[ Multimedia ]] is an integration of IT, Communication and Media, a tool that makes communications interactive, immersive and powerful.

Like other software segments, the global need in Multimedia related industries is for trained manpower. India has emerged as one of the largest markets to produce such multimedia specialists and the world is coming to us today to equip their studios with our professionals, with their sound technical knowledge and strong fundamentals.

The Indian Entertainment Industry stands at over Rs. 19,700 crores (US$ 4,377 million). It is expected to grow in double digits- at 11 % compounded annually over the next five years. The key driver for the Entertainment Industry in next decade would be Technology. India with its vast pool of skilled IT manpower and creative storytellers, is poised to take a great leap from a mere outsourcing destination to the right full holder of [[ Intellectual ]] Property.

India’s animation sector is witnessing a major boom. Indian animation industry, according to National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom), currently growing at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 30 percent, is expected to touch 15 billion dollars by 2008. The domestic industry growth would be driven by more co-production deals and increasing development of intellectual properties in India. The total global animation production is expected to touch 70 billion dollars shortly.

India has also not been left untouched by this wave of [[ proliferation ]] of gaming as a popular form of entertainment. The electronic gaming industry is one of the fastest growing segments within the software industry, even bigger than the global film industry. An AC Nielsen report states that the Indian gaming market (minus mobile gaming) was expected to be worth $50 million by 2005 with $15 million likely to come from PC gaming and $35 million from console-based gaming.

Mobile gaming is fast emerging a rage in the wireless business. Gaming is gradually becoming a key element in operators’ and content developers’ strategies. Propelled by end-user demand, gaming is growing quickly as an increasing number of Indian consumers take advantage of wireless mobility to enjoy entertainment on the go.

“India’s mobile gaming market will touch about $336m by 2009, while 220 million people will be playing games on phones by 2009 generating billions for mobile companies,” according to market analysts, In-Stat/MDR. “The Indian mobile-game business currently makes up about 5 percent of the global wireless market but it’s growing fast,” the research further points out.

Currently online gaming constitutes around 14% of the total video gaming segment. This is predicted to go up to a staggering 45% by 2009.

To enable those interested in this burgeoning field to sculpt a career in the Games industry, Arena Multimedia and Arena Animation Academy has a well-researched, industry-relevant Course DAE, and a huge alumni base of over 200,000 creative people which has already been given rave reviews by games development companies such as Indiagames, Paradox Studios etc. as well as new Indian upcoming animation studios such as VirtualSoft

    Welcome to Counter Report!

    Sunday, January 21st, 2007

Welcome to Counter Report! This is a long awaited Blog! This is for people to discuss things in the right perspective instead of having to put up with the biased and partisan views of the Press who’s been taking people for a ride for long. Today is the day of yellow journalism, and sensationalism is the order of the day. The facts get lost easily on us buried under emotional banter, and the usual news report of the journalist has become more of a personal epilogue with more of the reporter inside the news. Let us start a blogging to re-report events the way we see them!

Gandhi and pole dance by a joker

      Saturday, January 20th, 2007

A joker wore dhoti kurta, an ancient dress, though more symbolic of Gandhi to the present generation, and gave a stupendous performance of pole dance

      1. The boy was Indian.

An Indian is expected to have more respect for it’s leaders, though parody as a form of expression is not a very acceptable thing in India. However for parody you need to exaggerate the characteristics of a person/ event, whereas this person did not exaggerate any such fact. He merely vulgarized his performance and was not an art form by any means. Thumbs Down.

      2. Uploading of Content on YouTube.

These counter border channels defy all means of restrictions imposed by governments. It is befitting in a sense that now it is up to the receiver to decide on the acceptability of the message and the government would have to stop playing a role in that. Thumbs Up.

      3. Outrage of Indian IB Minister against 2 Indian TV Channels

Indian Information and Broadcasting Minister showed his outrage against 2 Indian TV Channels who showed the video in their news. Thumbs Down.

Indian Information and Broadcasting Minister showed his outrage against 2 Indian TV Channels who used the video to lace their news and up their viewer ratings. Certainly not desirable. And surely reporting through a sensationalism is more deplorable than even the actual act. Press needs to regain its humility while reporting and not act as a Justice Delivery Van. Thumbs Up.

      4. Inability of Indian Government in challenging YouTube in a large way

Time for governments to delicence Communcation and the control thereof. Selling of costly rights to broadcasts have been reduced to a mere hoax by the onslaught of Web, and VOIP. Why do you need to control and artificially raise prices of things that are available at a pittance anyway through technology that is a child’s play now. Thumbs Up.

      5. How is Gandhi’s image affected?

As a leader of immense proportions he is not affected at all by such trivial matters. These small incidents however bring back his memories and it is good in that manner. They cannot indignify any person than the person who performed the act, since he has to carry the burden in front of his friends, family and colleagues through out his life. Thumbs Up.

      6. Who is Gandhi?

Gandhi, or more popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi is the indian leader who led the freedom movement on a very unusual non-confrontationist agenda and did not give Britishers a platform to fight back. He used his knowledge of law to the fullest extent and was a natural ally of Jawahar Lal Nehru, another lawyer. The Gandhian style of operation extended itself to Nelson Mandela and many others after him who used his style to lead their nations to independence. Thumbs Up.

Shilpa Shetty and her Big Brother from UK

        Saturday, January 20th, 2007

The row over Jade Goody and her friend’s outbursts against Shilpa Shetty in particular in the British Reality TV show Big Brother had 10 prime characteristics:

        1. Calling India a Slum:

This is perhaps the only racist remark in the whole episode.

Jade Goody asked Shilpa to go back to the slums from where she came. A definite remark against Indians though it just describes her personal feelings against Indian and cannot be projected as a general British (or International) perception of India. Does show the vanity of Jade as well as the shallowness of her thoughts. Thumbs Down.

        2. Asking her to pick chicken bones from the toilet with her teeth

Though a common slang in english speaking world, No idea what it means, though it is merely a bullying statement by vain people. A shallow statement to make ever anyway. But remember that rarely does anyone speaking a slang means what he says. Thumbs Down.

        3. Shilpa backtracks her statements

Shipla was inside the house and off contact and never mentioned that there was a racist remark. Though outraged British Indians thought so. So there was never a case of Shilpa backtracking. And there’s no problem if Shilpa doesn’t feel that she was being subjected to racist remarks. Pleae don’t force people to feel what you like, it is her own decision to feel the way she likes. Thumbs Up.

Indian newspapers though carried statements of her sister Shamita, another actress, to this effect but the next day they cried fowl. Another case of inaccurate reporting by Newspapers. Thumbs Down.

        4. High Number of complaints received by British Media Watchdog

Given the sensitivity of the first statement, it was expected, though it could be a staged-managed response to try and revive a show with declining popularity. Neutral.

        5. Jade Goody being invited to India to cleanse herself

This step by the Incredible India campaign is Humour in Bad taste. No matter how demeaning a statement is made by a person, to retaliate at the same level trivializes the issue and converts it to a personal slugfest. Thumbs Down.

        6. Jade Goody being ousted by a huge margin from the show.

It is actually not about the remarks but about the way slang has come to stay in the language of british youth and they speak words without realising their meaning. Don’t understand? Well it’s like when people say Oh Holy Shit! They don’t really mean to say exactly that. Britishers don’t tolerate this type of slugfest and slandering and they have shown it in style. Thumbs Up.

        7. Shilpa being called a small time actress for all what I (Jade Goody) know

Well, no one needs to be well informed in a personal confrontation situation. I don’t expect all the people in the world to know about Shilpa Shetty, so newspapers to even include that statement is just a case of sensationalisation. Thumbs Down.

        8. Jade Goody’s has a Brand of perfumes that is being made in India!

Well this is a very important fact. And also that she has visited India for this. This proves that Jade is aware of India. This means either of two things, either Jade Goody has a very partisan view of things (shallow mind) OR this is the image that some of the visitors to India take home with them - not a good sign for Incredible India. Thumbs Down.

        9. Shilpa made a lot of money

It is no one’s concern. Well she went to take part in this as a part of her job. Dear realize that she’s not representing India in Olympics. She’s gone there to make money and if that requires her to tolerate bullying and position herself so that she can move on to final stages it’s her right to stage manage herself. Neutral.

        10. What is this fuss all about?

It was just a reality show - it showed reality. So what’s the big deal? This is REALITY. What is the job of governments in this? It’s not as if the show is promoting bullying or racism, so what is this fuss all about? Thumbs Down.
